The Science Behind HVAC Filters
The HVAC filters in your home remove contaminants from your indoor air while your HVAC system is running. The efficiency of the HVAC filter depends on how it works and its MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating.
Systems with mechanical filters will trap contaminants as air flows through them. Fiberglass filters, pleated filters, and HEPA filters are some good examples. HEPA filters have the highest MERV rating (17 and above) while fiberglass filters have the lowest (one to four).
Systems with electrostatic filters are a bit different. They use static electricity to attract and capture contaminants as air flows into the system. Most of them have a MERV rating of 5 to 12 depending on the type and the manufacturer.
Types of HVAC Filters and How They Affect Air Quality
The type of HVAC filter you have will have a strong impact on your indoor air quality. If you choose fiberglass filters, your HVAC system should be able to trap dust in your indoor air effectively. However, they won’t do much for allergy sufferers in your home and can’t trap pet dander.
Electrostatic and pleated filters with higher MERV ratings will do an okay job of trapping allergens in addition to dust but they will cost more than fiberglass filters.
HEPA filters have the highest levels of efficiency as they can trap even the smallest contaminants. However, they are the most expensive and may not work well with some HVAC systems.
Tips for Choosing the Right HVAC Filter for Your Home
If you’re thinking about choosing an HVAC filter for your home, you have to carefully evaluate your options. Some of the things you should look at include your household size, the number of pets you have, and any health concerns in the household.
If you have more people (including allergy sufferers) and a few pets, you’ll need to choose a filter with a higher MERV rating. Similarly, people living in areas with more pollution will need more efficient HVAC filters.
When choosing your filter, make sure you find a balance between filtration efficiency and the airflow coming through your air conditioner or furnace.
It may be tempting to choose a filter with the highest MERV rating you can find, but this may affect your HVAC system’s energy efficiency and overall performance. Always choose an option that meets your manufacturer’s recommendations.
Tips for Maintaining Your HVAC Filters
You have to maintain your HVAC filters regularly to keep the system functioning optimally. Here’s what you should do:
- Manufacturers recommend disposable filter replacement every one to three months.
- Check filters monthly to ensure they are not clogged or damaged.
- Wash reusable filters every one to two months in line with the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Always install filters correctly every replacement or they won’t work effectively.
