The North Alabama Pollen Apocalypse: How to Protect Your AC and Your Allergies

Spring in North Alabama brings blooming flowers, warmer weather, and a thick yellow dusting of pollen on every surface. While the landscape is beautiful, this seasonal explosion of allergens can spell disaster for both your HVAC system and your sinuses. At Eagle Pro Heating, Cooling, & Insulation, we understand how overwhelming the “pollen apocalypse” can be, and we’re here to help you breathe easier—literally.

Why Pollen Season Is Hard on Your AC

Your air conditioning system pulls in outside air, filters it, and cools it before circulating it through your home. When pollen counts spike, your AC filter becomes the first line of defense. But if it’s clogged or outdated, it can’t do its job effectively. This not only impacts indoor air quality but also strains your HVAC system, reducing its efficiency and potentially leading to costly breakdowns.

That’s why using the right HVAC pollen filter is crucial during North Alabama’s allergy season.

The Best AC Filter for Allergies in Alabama

Not all air filters are created equal. If you’re dealing with seasonal allergies, you’ll want more than just the standard fiberglass filter. The best AC filter for allergies in Alabama is one that captures microscopic pollen particles before they enter your living space.

Here are a few top contenders:

  • HEPA Filters: High-Efficiency Particulate Air filters are among the most effective at trapping pollen, dust mites, pet dander, and other allergens. They’re ideal for allergy sufferers but may require HVAC systems with the power to handle their density.
  • MERV 11-13 Filters: Filters with a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) of 11 or higher can trap smaller allergens like pollen and mold spores. They strike a good balance between air quality and system performance.
  • Electrostatic Filters: These reusable filters attract particles using static electricity. They’re effective and eco-friendly, but be sure to clean them regularly for optimal performance.

At Eagle Pro, we can help you choose the right HVAC pollen filter that fits your system and meets your air quality needs.

Maintenance Matters

Even the best filter won’t protect you if it’s dirty. During peak pollen season, we recommend checking your AC filter every 30 days and replacing it as needed. This simple step can dramatically improve both your system’s efficiency and your home’s air quality.

For added protection, consider scheduling a professional HVAC maintenance visit. Our technicians will clean your system, check your ductwork, and ensure your AC is fully prepared to keep allergens at bay.

Additional Tips to Beat the Pollen

  • Keep windows and doors closed during high pollen count days.
  • Shower and change clothes after spending time outdoors to avoid tracking pollen inside.
  • Use a dehumidifier to discourage mold and dust mites that thrive in humid conditions.
  • Upgrade your thermostat to one with air quality monitoring features.

Final Thoughts

The North Alabama pollen apocalypse might be unavoidable, but suffering through it isn’t. With the right AC filter for allergies, consistent maintenance, and a little expert help from Eagle Pro Heating, Cooling, & Insulation, your home can remain a refuge from the allergens swirling outside.

Need help choosing the best HVAC pollen filter or scheduling a seasonal tune-up? Call Eagle Pro today at (256) 767-5154 in Muscle Shoals, AL and breathe easy this spring.

Why Is My Alabama Air Conditioner Freezing Up? (It’s Probably the Humidity)

A freezing air conditioner is more than just an inconvenience—it’s a sign that your system isn’t operating correctly. In Northern Alabama, homeowners often encounter this problem during the hottest months of the year, and ignoring it can lead to higher energy bills and costly repairs.

At Eagle Pro Heating & Cooling, we provide fast, reliable AC repair services to keep your system running efficiently in Muscle Shoals, AL. Recognizing the warning signs early can help protect your unit, prevent damage, and keep your home comfortable all season long.

Understanding AC Freezing

An air conditioner freezes when the evaporator coil temperature drops below 32°F. This occurs when the system can’t maintain proper heat exchange, causing condensation on the coils to turn into ice. If left unchecked, ice accumulation restricts airflow even further, creating a vicious cycle: your system works harder, delivers less cooling, and risks additional damage.

Humidity’s Role in Freezing ACs

Alabama’s high humidity is often the main culprit behind a freezing air conditioner. When humidity levels consistently exceed 60%, your AC has to work harder to remove moisture from the air. This extra strain can push the system beyond its limits, especially if other issues are present.

Key ways humidity contributes to AC freezing:

  • Rapid condensation: Moist air passing over the cold evaporator coil creates excessive condensation.
  • Drain issues: If the system can’t remove moisture fast enough—due to clogged drains or dirty coils—it can build up and freeze.
  • Airflow restrictions: Low airflow from blocked vents or dirty filters slows moisture removal, increasing the risk of ice formation.
  • Longer run times: During Northern Alabama’s hot, humid summers, the AC runs longer cycles, giving more opportunity for ice to develop.

When these factors combine, ice forms on the evaporator coil, reducing cooling efficiency and potentially damaging the system if not addressed promptly.

Common AC Issues That Lead to Freezing

Several factors can cause your air conditioner to freeze. Identifying them early helps prevent damage and keeps your system running efficiently:

  • Dirty Air Filters: Clogged filters restrict airflow over the evaporator coil, causing temperatures to drop too low. Replace filters monthly during peak cooling season to maintain proper airflow.
  • Low Refrigerant Levels: Leaks reduce the system’s ability to transfer heat, causing the evaporator coil to get excessively cold and form ice. This issue requires professional diagnosis and repair.
  • Blocked or Closed Vents: Furniture or closed vents in unused rooms can limit airflow, forcing your AC to work harder while reducing warm air circulation over the coil.
  • Thermostat or Sensor Problems: Faulty thermostats or misreading temperature sensors can cause the system to run continuously or cycle incorrectly, leading to over-cooling and ice buildup.

Addressing these common issues promptly can prevent a freezing AC from causing more serious problems.

Signs Your AC Is Freezing Up

Watch for these warning signs that indicate your air conditioner is developing freezing issues:

  • Reduced cooling performance despite the system running constantly
  • Inconsistent airflow from vents throughout your home
  • Visible ice formation on indoor units, outdoor coils, or refrigerant lines
  • Water pooling around your indoor unit as ice melts
  • Unusual noises like grinding, rattling, or irregular cycling sounds
  • Higher energy bills as your system works harder to maintain temperature

Don’t wait until ice completely blocks your system. These early warning signs indicate problems that professional AC repair can resolve before major damage occurs.

Why Is My Air Conditioner Not Cooling Effectively?

In Northern Alabama, summer heat and humidity can quickly become unbearable. When your air conditioner isn’t cooling your home effectively, it can be a major inconvenience. Keeping your cooling system running efficiently isn’t just about comfort — it’s essential for your home’s wellbeing.

At Eagle Pro Heating, Cooling, & Insulation, we provide reliable air conditioner repair services to homeowners across Northern Alabama. With prompt action and expert care, we’re here to help you resolve these issues quickly and get your air conditioner performing at its best again.

Dirty or Clogged Air Filters

Your air filter serves as the first line of defense, capturing dust, dirt, and allergens before they circulate in your home. Over time, these filters can become clogged with particles, trapping airflow and reducing the system’s efficiency.

Warning signs of a dirty or clogged air filter:

  • Weak airflow
  • Dust buildup around vents
  • Reduced cooling power

To keep your air conditioner running efficiently, check your air filters every month and replace or clean them every 1–3 months. A clean filter helps your system work better and can prevent many common cooling issues. If you’re unsure where the filter is located, consult your user manual or call a professional for help.

Low Refrigerant Levels

Refrigerant is the essential fluid in your air conditioning system. It absorbs and expels heat from your home, making cooling possible. Low refrigerant levels typically point to leaks or improper filling during installation.

Signs your refrigerant is low:

  • Air from vents feels warm
  • Ice forming on coils or refrigerant lines
  • Increased energy use without improved cooling

Low refrigerant strains your system, risking overheating and failure. Leaks are hazardous and require certified technicians to repair properly.

Pro Tip: New industry regulations require HVAC systems to use updated, environmentally friendly refrigerants that improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Learn more here.

Thermostat Malfunctions

Your thermostat acts as the control center of your air conditioning system, ensuring the temperature stays consistent. When the device malfunctions, it may misread the temperature in your home, resulting in inefficient cooling.

Watch for these thermostat issues:

  • AC cycles on and off too frequently
  • Thermostat display is blank or unresponsive
  • The air conditioner doesn’t match the temperature setting

To fix this, first double-check that your thermostat is set to “Cool” mode and replace the batteries if they’re low. If the problem continues, it’s best to have a professional assess and calibrate or replace the thermostat. For greater control and energy savings, consider upgrading to a programmable or smart thermostat.

Dirty Coils and Condenser Units

Your air conditioner’s evaporator and condenser coils are responsible for transferring heat effectively. Over time, dirt, dust, and debris can accumulate on these essential components, hindering heat absorption and dissipation.

Watch for these signs of dirty coils:

  • Warm air blowing from vents
  • Visible dirt and debris on condenser units
  • Higher-than-usual electricity bills during peak usage

Dirty coils make it harder for your system to cool efficiently, leading to increased wear-and-tear on the unit’s components and a spike in energy bills. To fix this, keep the area around your outdoor condenser clear of leaves, grass, and debris. It’s also important to schedule professional AC maintenance at least once a year for thorough coil cleaning.

Being Proactive Saves Time and Money

When your air conditioner isn’t cooling effectively, taking quick action is the key to maintaining comfort and avoiding expensive repairs. Whether it’s something as simple as replacing an air filter or addressing low refrigerant levels, understanding the problem early helps you get back to enjoying a cool, refreshing home.

5 Signs Your AC Unit Needs Repair or Replacement

Is your home not cooling as well as it used to? It could be a sign that your AC unit is failing. Catching the early warning signs can help you avoid uncomfortable summer days and expensive repairs down the road.

At Eagle Pro Heating, Cooling, & Insulation, we offer expert AC repair and replacement services across Northern Alabama. In this guide, we’ll walk you through five key signs that your AC unit might need professional attention.

Unusual Sounds Signaling AC Unit Problems

Your unit should operate quietly, with just a low humming sound. Unusual noises are one of the most common AC unit repair signs, signaling that something inside the system isn’t functioning properly. Never ignore new sounds from your AC unit, as they typically worsen over time.

Reduced Cooling Performance

One of the most common AC problems is warm air blowing from the vents instead of a nice, cool breeze. This could be due to a refrigerant leak, a faulty compressor, or other issues. If troubleshooting simple fixes like adjusting the thermostat doesn’t help, it’s time to call the professionals.

Frequent Cycling

If your AC unit seems to be cycling on and off more than usual without cooling your home properly, this could indicate problems with the thermostat, airflow, or the unit’s efficiency. Knowing when to repair AC units with frequent cycling saves you from unnecessarily high energy costs. An overworked AC can drive up your energy bills and lead to more serious breakdowns if not addressed.

Foul Odors

Have you noticed musty or moldy smells coming from your air conditioning system? If so, mold or mildew could be growing in the unit. This could be a result of moisture buildup in the ducts or the system itself.

Routine filter changes can prevent mold accumulation in the system. Be sure to schedule regular maintenance and prompt repairs as soon as you notice this issue.

Rising Energy Bills Without Usage Changes

Unexplained increases in your electricity bills are one of the first air conditioner replacement indicators. When components wear out, the system works harder and uses more energy to deliver the same cooling performance. This drop in efficiency can stem from common issues like age-related wear, refrigerant leaks, dirty components, or failing parts.

Knowing when to replace AC units with declining efficiency isn’t always an easy decision. Our professional technicians can evaluate your unit to help you determine whether you should repair or replace the faulty unit to restore your home’s efficiency.

Essential Tips To Follow When Your Heat Pump Stops Working

As spring approaches, now is the perfect time to ensure your heat pump is ready for the change in seasons. At Eagle Pro Heating, Cooling, & Insulation, we provide expert maintenance and repair services to keep your heating system running smoothly. We’re committed to helping you stay comfortable and safe, no matter the weather.

Keep reading for useful tips on troubleshooting heat pump issues and preparing for the warmer months ahead.

Check the Thermostat Settings

The first step in troubleshooting is to check the device settings, adjusting the temperature to see if it triggers the HVAC system to respond. Typically, thermostats last between 10 and 15 years, but as they age, they may struggle to accurately detect the ambient temperature or communicate effectively with your HVAC system.

Other common issues can arise as well, such as forgetting to adjust the device from “Auto,” which causes the fan to blow without producing hot or cold air. Additionally, placing the thermostat in direct sunlight or near curtains can interfere with its readings.

Inspect the Circuit Breaker

If the thermostat looks fine, the next step in heat pump diagnosis includes checking the circuit breaker. Power problems can cause surges that shut down the system to prevent the wires from frying.

Locate the circuit, and if it’s off, flip it back on. If the breaker trips frequently, you likely have a larger problem that needs professional attention.

The following issues tend to cause tripped breakers:

  • Faulty capacitors
  • Loose electrical connections
  • Compressor failure leading to short-cycling
  • DIY installations

Clear Any Obstructions Around the Outdoor Unit

The heating system includes an indoor and outdoor portion. The exterior unit draws in ambient air and uses refrigerant to heat or cool it to your preferences. The outdoor components remain vulnerable to dirt buildup, accumulating leaves, and even pest infestations.

When a device has excessive debris, it creates an airflow restriction that forces it to work harder. This causes considerable stress on the system, and the wear and tear can lead to significant damage. If cleaning off the unit doesn’t fix the issue, proceed to step four.

Call a Professional for Diagnostics and Repairs

Even if you troubleshoot the problem yourself, call a professional to ensure the system doesn’t experience any lasting damage. While experts can repair any issue, the most common tasks include:

  • Refilling refrigerant levels and fixing leaks
  • Fixing reversing valve malfunctions
  • Clearing clogged condensate lines
  • Lubricating grinding components
  • Repairing faulty capacitors

No matter how common or complicated the issue, the right experts diagnose the problem and find the most efficient and cost-effective solution.

Why a Ductless Mini-Split Is the Perfect HVAC Solution for the New Year

As North Alabama homeowners get ready for the new year, enhancing indoor comfort often becomes a top priority. Saving on energy bills is a key goal for many, and improving your HVAC system’s efficiency is one of the best ways to achieve that. A ductless mini-split system is often the perfect solution, offering both energy efficiency and cost savings.

Eagle Pro Heating, Cooling, & Insulation specializes in installing ductless HVAC systems. If you’re seeking energy-efficient solutions to lower your utility bills, you’re in the right place. Let’s dive into why a mini-split system could be the perfect HVAC choice for your home in the year ahead.

Customized Comfort with Zoned Heating and Cooling

The most prominent feature of a ductless mini-split system is its ability to offer zoned heating and cooling. Unlike traditional systems that focus on an entire home, mini-splits allow you to create custom temperature “zones.” With mini-splits, you can set each room or zone to the ideal temperature for its occupant, eliminating the need for thermostat arguments.

You can also save money by keeping your living room warm while maintaining a cooler bedroom. Adjust temperatures for different family members or rooms with varying sun exposure. This allows for personalized comfort in every room and for every family member, day and night.

Boost Energy Efficiency and Lower Energy Costs

A ductless HVAC system is your eco-friendly choice this year. Traditional HVAC systems can lose up to 30% of energy through ductwork, according to the Department of Energy. Your mini-split will eliminate this issue by delivering conditioned air directly where you need it.

Another advantage is that many mini-splits feature advanced inverter technology, which adjusts power usage to match real-time heating and cooling demands. You’ll enjoy a more sustainable household along with lower utility bills.

Compact Design for Seamless Installation

As you look to the future of your heating and cooling needs, you’ll certainly appreciate the compact design of a ductless system. Whether you are retrofitting an older property, adding a sunroom, or upgrading your garage or office space, a mini-split system can slot right in with minimal disruption to the layout or space requirements.

There is no need for extensive ductwork. The installation process is simple: indoor units are mounted and connected to an outdoor condenser with discreet refrigerant lines. It’s fast, clean, and customized to fit your home’s specific layout.

Improved Indoor Air Quality for Healthier Living

Traditional HVAC systems accumulate dust, allergens, and other pollutants in their ductwork. These contaminants then circulate throughout your home, negatively impacting air quality.

In contrast, mini-split systems are ductless and feature advanced multi-stage filtration. This not only helps trap harmful particles but also significantly improves the air quality in your living space.

Modern Convenience with Precise Temperature Control

If you’d like some more technical reasons to go with a mini-split, consider the following:

  • These new designs run quietly.
  • Advanced features include programmable thermostats for precise control.
  • Smart home technologies integrate through digital devices.

Modern vs. Outdated HVAC Systems | Why You May Need a New HVAC Unit

Your HVAC unit has served you well for years. It provides comfort during the hottest and coldest days of the year, helping you escape extreme exterior temperatures and stay safe.

But no system lasts forever. Maybe your unit has started to show signs of aging, like more frequent repairs or decreased efficiency. Perhaps it still functions pretty well, but you’re starting to notice it’s not as convenient as the models your friends have. Or, maybe it’s just starting to near the end of its lifespan, and you’ll need to shop around for a new HVAC system soon.

Choosing to purchase a brand-new climate control system can be an excellent way to save money and stay comfortable, but not everyone is ready to invest. At Eagle Pro Heating and Cooling, we’re here to break down the reasons you might want to get a new HVAC unit — especially if you’ve had yours for quite some time.

Your Current System May Not Be as Energy-Efficient as Modern Models

As time has gone on, many people have become more environmentally conscious. Individuals, businesses, and the government have taken steps to try and reduce their impact — and that includes reducing energy consumption.

HVAC system manufacturers have worked hard to develop technology that will help units provide the same levels of heating and cooling while using much less energy. How effective they are at this is determined by their SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficient Ratio) rating. In the early 2000s, units needed to have a minimum rating of 10; in more recent years, however, that number’s increased to 13.

Modern heating and cooling units are inherently more energy-efficient because of advancing technology, but they are also more efficient than old, outdated units that don’t perform as well as they once did. Your HVAC unit will sustain wear and tear over time. The longer you’ve had it, the more wear it’ll sustain — and the less efficient it will be.

If you have a relatively old unit, consider replacing it with a newer model. The increased energy efficiency means that your HVAC system won’t have to work quite so hard to provide outstanding comfort, which leads to lower energy bills and a longer lifespan. Plus, energy-efficient upgrades sometimes come with rebates and incentives, helping you enjoy extra benefits.

You Can Enjoy Enhanced Performance and Comfort

Your old HVAC unit might have served you faithfully for years, but as time has gone on, you’ve likely noticed some quirks.

Maybe the unit makes loud rattling and clanking noises while running, making it harder to talk to others or watch TV. Or, perhaps you’ve noticed that certain areas seem warmer or colder than others. Maybe your indoor air quality or humidity levels aren’t quite as controlled as you’d like them to be, making your home a little less comfortable.

Advancing technology hasn’t just helped improve energy efficiency; it’s improved just how comfortable your system can make your home. Modern HVAC systems tend to be quieter, offer more precise temperature control, and provide enhanced humidity control, letting you enjoy year-round comfort.

In addition, the older an HVAC system is, the worse its performance will be. Getting a new system can help you reduce hot and cold spots, improve indoor air quality, and enhance your comfort and satisfaction overall.

Take Advantage of a More Reliable, Durable System

You rely on your HVAC system to keep your building at a comfortable temperature. You can’t afford to be dealing with breakdowns during the hottest or coldest days of the year — but unfortunately, older units may not always hold up under pressure.

Even the most reliable old units will eventually start to break down due to age, requiring frequent repairs to get them running again. Plus, severe weather events or other disasters can sometimes damage the system, leaving you with uncomfortable or even dangerous temperatures.

HVAC manufacturers have taken steps to improve modern units and reduce the risk of breakdowns. Improved materials, construction, and engineering have helped to make these units incredibly durable, able to stand up to harsh weather and prolonged use without falling apart.

By investing in a new unit, you can give yourself a little peace of mind, knowing that you’re less likely to experience a breakdown when you need your system the most.

Utilize Advanced Technological Features and Smart Controls

No matter how reliable an older unit seems, they just don’t have the same convenience as modern units. Modern models incorporate advanced technology to make usage easier; just some of the features you can take advantage of include:

  • Variable-speed motors: Do you want more precise temperature control? Modern HVAC systems can provide it through variable-speed motors. As the name implies, these motors can change how fast they move, which lets you better adjust how warm or cold your property is.
  • Programmable thermostats: Do you want to make sure that your property stays consistently at one set temperature? Would you like to adjust the temperature so your HVAC system only operates when you’re home? Programmable thermostats — included in many modern HVAC systems — are the perfect tools.
  • Zoning systems: You likely don’t need to keep every room at the same temperature. Zoning systems let you control the temperature of rooms individually, improving energy efficiency.
  • Remote monitoring capabilities: Check your HVAC system, even when you’re out and about! Remote monitoring capabilities let you adjust temperature settings, check your system’s operation, and more.

Consider upgrading your HVAC equipment and enjoy enhanced comfort, efficiency, and convenience in your daily life.

Eagle pro was awesome. The eagle pro associate was very thoughtful for putting on the booties to keep my house being dirty. I even told him he could take off the booties cuz I got to sweep the floor anyway, he said, "no way", I guess he preferred to put on the booties on so that way my house stayed clean like no dirt from his shoes will be on my floor. He made sure that HVAC, the thermostat, and the attic fan was installed correctly. He checked for any issues or problems, which there was none. Why would I choose any other HVAC heating and cooling business, I'll stick with eagle pro for a long time.

Tech Trace Burgett was very Polite, and professional, explained what he would be doing and then explained what he did and what he found. He made suggestions on a couple of things that would protect my unit and what I could do to get cleaner air, year round in my home. In all the years of owning an Hvac Unit no one has ever mentioned anything like that and I appreciate his knowledge on the two items. Eagle Pro Heating and Cooling and Technician Trace Burgett. Thank You for making this service call a pleasant one.

Very thorough and so helpful. Nate was excellent and gave me such helpful advice. So disappointed they will be moving out of our area because they have always been great to me. Thanks to Nate and everyone for being such a great company.

I had an extensive amount of work to be done in my crawlspace, which included replacing all the 50+ year old duct work. The Eagle Pro team went above and beyond what I was expecting of them by doing several extra tasks that were not included in the quote. I want to commend Dakota, David, James, Josh and Nathan for their professionalism in work and courtesy. A special shout out to Nathan for keeping me updated on what they had done, were currently doing and next steps, plus assistance in moving some furniture. I am well pleased with their work and highly recommend their services.
