Community Kindness: Eagle Pro Heating & Cooling Steps Up for a Family in Need

In the heart of North Alabama, a heartwarming story of community support and generosity has emerged from a local news outlet, WAFF 48 Huntsville. In the WAFF 48 article by Aria Pons, Ivy Melson and Dakotah McFerson, a local couple, recently faced a series of unfortunate events that put immense strain on their lives. After being scammed by a contractor, the couple had to rely on the support of friends and family to complete their home project. While their son was born prematurely, which required an extended hospital stay, Melson & McFerson’s HVAC unit broke down and the pipes in their home had burst.

Amidst these challenges, the team at Eagle Pro Heating & Cooling learned about the Melson and McFerson’s dire situation and decided to lend a helping hand. Demonstrating the true spirit of community, Eagle Pro donated and installed a brand-new HVAC unit for the family. This generous act not only restored comfort to their home but also provided much-needed relief during an incredibly stressful period. Melson expressed profound gratitude in the WAFF 48 article, stating, “It’s just so hard to put into words when something like this is done. We’re very giving people, so when something like this happens to you, it’s just so hard to put into words how thankful and how blessed we are.”

For Melson and McFerson, this unexpected kindness has been a beacon of hope in a challenging year. McFerson likened their struggle to quicksand, feeling as though they were sinking despite their efforts to stay afloat. The support from Eagle Pro Heating & Cooling, however, has offered them a renewed sense of optimism. “You’re still trying to get your head above water and you still feel like you can’t. I don’t even know how to really thank them for it,” according to McFerson in the WAFF 48 report.

This story is a testament to the remarkable sense of community in North Alabama. McFerson shared that the experience has given him hope for the future, particularly for the world his son will grow up in. The actions of Eagle Pro Heating & Cooling exemplify the profound impact that local businesses can have on their communities, not just through their services, but through acts of compassion and solidarity.

How to Clean Your Air Conditioning System

It’s frustrating to realize your AC system isn’t working on a hot summer day. Still, you can prevent most premature breakdowns and preserve temperature control in your house by maintaining your cooling unit correctly. Routine cleaning is one of the important steps in HVAC maintenance.

So how do you clean an air conditioner unit? Discover the necessary steps in the post below.

Areas to Focus on When Cleaning Air Conditioning Systems

You should focus on cleaning the filter and condenser coils with any air conditioning system. Air filters trap airborne particles that would otherwise circulate around your home and settle on surfaces. If your unit’s filter is too dirty, it’ll restrict airflow from the cooling system which can result in excess energy consumption to make up for the inefficiency.

The outdoor unit for mini-splits and central air conditioners houses the condenser coils, helping dissipate the heat coming from the indoor air outside. Too much dirt and debris collecting on the coils prevents them from transferring heat correctly which can also lead to reduced system performance.

Steps for Cleaning Air Filters

Though you should always contact a professional HVAC company to clean your AC system, cleaning the air filter is something you can do yourself. If you have a mini-split cooling unit, locate the air filter inside the front panel of the indoor portion of the system.

You can clean a reusable filter by dusting the surface with a soft cloth, rinsing it in tepid water, and drying it completely before putting the filter back into its housing.

The same steps apply to reusable filters for central air conditioners. Some systems don’t have reusable air filters, so you can simply swap the dirty filter with a clean one.

Steps for Cleaning Air Handlers

Air handlers are the indoor parts of an air conditioning system that house the evaporator coils. These coils facilitate the heat transfer to cool buildings so they must be free of dirt to work correctly. Cleaning them involves the following steps:

  • Turn off the AC system’s power
  • Expose the coils by removing the access panel
  • Vacuum the coils gently using a soft brush attachment
  • Apply a solution containing water and mild detergent
  • Let the solution sit for a few minutes, then wipe it off

Steps for Cleaning Outdoor Condenser Units

The condenser coils are in the air conditioner’s outdoor unit. These are the steps to clean this equipment:

  • Remove debris from the unit’s casing
  • Ensure the path around the equipment is free of obstructions
  • Call a professional to clean the condenser coils or fan blades

Getting Started With Your AC Spring Cleaning

Embarking on a spring cleaning journey for your AC system requires a thoughtful approach, beginning with understanding the specific model and its unique needs.

Before diving into the cleaning process, it’s important to gather all necessary tools and products that will ensure a thorough clean without causing harm to the system components.

Identify Your AC Model and Specific Needs

Kicking off your AC system’s spring cleaning means first taking a close look at the specific model you have at home. Different models have their nuances, whether it’s a more traditional unit or one with high-efficiency features like Energy Star ratings. Recognizing these details ensures you apply the right care without inadvertently causing damage.

Refreshing Your Air Conditioner Filters

Turning our focus to the heart of any air conditioning system, the filters demand special attention during your spring cleaning endeavor.

They play a pivotal role in maintaining both air quality and system efficiency, acting as the first line of defense against dust, allergens, and other airborne particles. The process begins with removing the filters to scrutinize their condition—this step is crucial for determining whether they simply need a refresh or a full replacement.

The cleanliness of these components not only affects the air you breathe but also the system’s ability to cool your home effectively. Additionally, proper fitment upon reinstalling filters is paramount; an ill-fitting filter can hinder performance and compromise air quality.

Deep Cleaning Air Conditioner Coils and Coil Fins

Moving deeper into the task of spring cleaning our air conditioning system, we turn our attention to the coils and coil fins—vital components that play a significant role in the cooling process.

Accessing these parts demands delicacy and precision, ensuring that we safeguard their structure and functionality during cleaning. This is why Eagle Pro suggests a trained HVAC technician lead the way with your AC’s spring maintenance.

They will be utilizing specialized tools, such as a soft brush for dust removal and a fin comb for realigning any bent coil fins, enhancing the effectiveness of this maintenance step.

These efforts not only contribute to the overall efficiency of the cooling system but also extend its service life by preventing common issues caused by blockages and damage.

Ensuring Condensate Drains Are Clear

Turning our attention to the condensate drain—an often overlooked yet crucial component of air conditioning maintenance—ensures our system remains clear of water backup and runs efficiently.

Encountering a blockage in this area can lead to water damage, mold growth, and decreased air quality, making this step indispensable.

Our HVAC professionals tackle this task by first locating the condensate drain tube, a critical step for a successful clean-up.

Next, employing a wet/dry vacuum enables our technicians to effectively remove any debris or blockages that might be lurking in the line.

Finally, a gentle flush with a solution ensures the line is not only clear but also sanitized, preventing algae and mold from taking hold.

This trio of actions guarantees the AC’s condensate drain remains unobstructed, promoting a healthier and more efficient system.

When to Hire a Professional for AC Maintenance

While diving into the depths of AC spring cleaning, some tasks are simply beyond the reach of even the most diligent homeowners.

Recognizing when to step back and call in a professional can make all the difference in maintaining a system’s efficiency and longevity.

From puzzling noises to inefficiency woes, there are clear indicators that it’s time to seek expert assistance.

Choosing the right HVAC professional becomes the next crucial step, ensuring that their expertise aligns with your system’s specific needs.

Not only does selecting a skilled technician provide peace of mind, but it also guarantees that my AC receives the comprehensive care it deserves.

Preparing your system for a professional inspection is equally important, allowing the technician to conduct a thorough and unobstructed evaluation.

Recognize Signs That Indicate a Professional Is Needed

Understanding when the situation calls for a professional’s touch is key to maintaining the health and efficiency of your AC system. For instance, if you notice inconsistent cooling or an unusual spike in your utility bills despite diligent seasonal maintenance, those are clear signs that a deeper issue might be at play, one perhaps rooted in the system’s internal mechanics or electrical wiring, areas where your expertise reaches its limits.

Hearing strange noises emanating from the unit or observing ice formation on the pipes signals that it’s time to call in a professional. These symptoms often indicate significant underlying problems such as refrigerant leaks or compressor issues, which require the specialized knowledge and tools of an expert in AC maintenance. Acknowledging these signs and acting swiftly not only spares any future headaches but also safeguards the system’s longevity and your home’s comfort. Get started with your professional AC Maintenance with the Eagle Pro team.

Cost Savings Over Time

The notion of maintenance comes with a price tag, but it spells savings in bold letters over the long haul. Think of it as an economic shield against the onslaught of potential repairs, replacements, and energy drain that neglected systems incur. Regular care for your heating system is a strategy that puts your finances first, allowing you to sidestep the pitfalls of emergency breakdowns.

  • Clogged Air Filters
  • Malfunctioning Thermostat
  • Ignition or Pilot Light Problems
  • Strange Noises
  • Blower Motor Issues

Clogged Air Filters

The air filter in your HVAC system plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy indoor environment for you and your family. Acting as a barrier against various impurities, from dirt to debris, the air filter diligently filters out particles, ensuring that the air circulated throughout your home remains clean and free from contaminants. This not only contributes to the overall cleanliness of your living space but also has a direct impact on the quality of the air you breathe.

It’s important to recognize that a clogged air filter can significantly impede the efficiency of your heating and cooling systems. When the filter becomes congested with accumulated dirt and debris, it restricts the airflow, resulting in inadequate temperature regulation. This, in turn, can lead to increased energy consumption as your HVAC system works harder to compensate for the reduced airflow.

As a proactive measure, we recommend changing your air filters regularly, ideally every 90 days. However, it’s important to note that certain factors, such as the prevalence of allergens in your area, may require more frequent replacements.

By adhering to a routine air filter replacement schedule, you not only optimize the efficiency of your HVAC system but also contribute to the overall well-being of your indoor environment.

Clean air filters not only enhance the performance of your heating and cooling systems but also promote better indoor air quality, making your home a healthier and more comfortable living space for you and your loved ones.

Malfunctioning Thermostat

At the core of your heating system is the thermostat.

With just a few buttons, it allows you to control the temperature of your home. Therefore, it is necessary to have a functioning thermostat to keep your home at your desired temperature.

When it turns faulty, it may send signals to begin a heating cycle you do not want. Occasionally, there may be electric issues within the hardware system. When your thermostat is not working properly, our team is ready to diagnose the problem and get it back up and running smoothly.

Ignition or Pilot Light Problems

As part of the heating process, the ignition or pilot light ignites the gas that heats the air. If your HVAC is blowing air, but it is not warm, this may be a sign that your ignition or pilot light is not working correctly.

Strange Noises

Strange noises are the number one indicator that there might be an issue with your heating system.

Whether you hear clunking or rattling, it may be time to call a professional. These noises could indicate loose parts, airflow restrictions, or wear and tear. We recommend getting a technician over to your home to check it out promptly.

Blower Motor Issues

The blower motor is responsible for blowing the heated air throughout the ductwork to warm your home.  When it malfunctions, it may lead to uneven cooling throughout your home.

Because of this, your heating system has to work even harder.  Signs of a faulty blower motor are reduced airflow, overheating, and increased energy and heating bills.

Signs You Need Heating Repairs

Regular inspections and maintenance can identify potential issues early on, allowing for timely interventions that prevent disruptions to your heating system. This proactive approach aligns with our commitment to providing comprehensive solutions that not only fix immediate concerns but also contribute to the long-term reliability of your heating system.

When Should You Get AC Maintenance?

According to the US Department of Energy, you can save up to 30% on your energy bill by scheduling regular preventive maintenance. This type of maintenance ensures your HVAC system runs at close to peak efficiency. That said, you may be wondering when the best time is to schedule AC maintenance. Here are some things to keep in mind.

The Best Time to Schedule AC Maintenance

The best time to schedule AC maintenance is usually during the spring. This is the perfect time to give your AC a test run because the weather outside is warmer. Winter is generally not a good time because your AC might be sluggish in the colder temperatures, and many people are heating their homes during those months, not cooling them. The good thing about spring AC maintenance is that it ensures that your AC is ready before summer is in full swing. That way, you don’t have to worry about AC repairs and breakdowns when the weather becomes too hot.

Signs You Need AC Maintenance

Although spring is the best time to schedule AC maintenance, you shouldn’t hesitate to get in touch with a professional if you feel that your unit needs attention. The biggest sign that your AC needs professional maintenance is when you notice an unexplained increase in your heating and cooling bills. This is a sign that your AC is not running efficiently. Sometimes, your AC unit may be running, but there are some issues that you may notice, such as strange smells and noises. Routine maintenance can easily take care of this problem.

When to Replace Your AC

During routine AC maintenance, your technician may discover signs that indicate it’s now time to replace your AC. Usually, this happens when your unit is more than a decade old and has experienced too much wear and tear. If you haven’t been religious about AC maintenance before, this might accelerate the demise of your unit, and you may need to replace it sooner. Soon after getting a new unit, the best thing you can do is schedule preventive maintenance. This will extend the life of your AC and reduce the need for repairs.

These are some of the things you need to know when deciding the best time to schedule AC maintenance. Now that you have all the pertinent details on hand, the best thing is to get in touch with us to see how soon you can set up an appointment.

7 Steps to Get Your Furnace Ready for Winter

According to the Indoor Air Quality Association, heating and air conditioning maintenance is one of the easiest ways to avoid costly breakdowns. As a matter of fact, you can reduce unexpected breakdowns by up to 95% by having regular maintenance done.

There are seven things you should do outside of regular maintenance to ensure your furnace is ready for winter.

1. Turn on Your Furnace

You want to be sure to turn your furnace on before winter arrives. A lot of people find out at the beginning of the heating season when they need heat that their heating system does not work. It is better to find out that you have a heating issue before the heating season.

2. Visually Assess Your Furnace

Part of your annual heating check is doing a visual inspection. Make note of anything that seems out of place. Look for loose wires and any obvious damage.

3. Clean Around the Furnace

Be sure that you clear away any debris from the furnace to ensure safety and proper airflow. Never pile boxes or bags up near your furnace. It is important that you never block the air intake on your furnace.

4. Change the Filter

It is important that you change the filter on your furnace regularly. Before you fire up the heating system for the season, one of the simplest heating and air conditioning maintenance tasks you can do is to change the air filter on your system.

5. If You Have a Humidifier on Your System, Check It

Some furnaces are outfitted with humidifiers. It is important that you check your humidifier before you turn on your heat for the season. If it needs attention or repair, now is the time to do it.

6. Check Your Carbon Monoxide Detectors

While you are conducting your preseason heating and air conditioning maintenance, you should take the time to check your carbon monoxide detectors. Remembering to check the function of your carbon monoxide detectors during your yearly heating and air conditioning maintenance will ensure safe operation.

7. Change the Batteries on Your Thermostat

If your thermostat uses batteries, change the batteries before you turn on your heating system. Fresh batteries in your thermostat will ensure that your thermostat is accurate.

The easiest way to avoid problems with your heating system is to get professional heating and air conditioning maintenance regularly.

6 Signs You Need Blown-In Insulation

What Is Blown-In Insulation?

Blown-in insulation is a type of home insulation that is quite popular among homeowners. The term “blown-in” refers to the method of installation. This insulation material is literally blown into attic spaces, wall spaces, or other areas that need insulation, filling them up effectively.

The three main types of blown-in insulation are cellulose insulation, fiberglass insulation, and mineral wool. Cellulose insulation is eco-friendly as it’s made from recycled materials like recycled newspaper and recycled paper. Fiberglass insulation, made from tiny glass fibers, and mineral wool, composed of rock wool or slag wool, are also excellent options.

So, when would you need to consider installing blown in insulation in your home?

Signs You Need Blown-In Insulation

1. High Energy Bills

One of the significant signs you need blown-in insulation is having high energy bills. If your heating and cooling system is working overtime to maintain a comfortable temperature, it might be due to inadequate or damaged insulation.

2. Uneven Temperature Throughout the House

Cold rooms and drafty areas in your house can indicate under insulated spaces. Blown-in insulation helps in maintaining a consistent temperature throughout your home.

3. Old Insulation

Over time, existing insulation becomes less effective. If your old insulation is showing signs of wear and tear, or if it has been affected by frequent leaks, it might be time to consider new insulation.

4. Ice Dams on the Roof

Ice dams form when the heat from your house melts the snow on your roof, and the water refreezes at the edges. This phenomenon could indicate a lack of proper insulation in your attic space.

5. Noise from Outside

If outside noise easily penetrates your house, you might need better insulation. Blown-in insulation not only helps maintain temperature but also helps reduce noise.

6. Signs of Pests

Insulation materials, particularly cellulose, can become nesting grounds for pests. If you notice signs of pests in your existing insulation, it might need to be replaced.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Blown-In Insulation

Insulation Material

The choice between cellulose, fiberglass, or mineral wool depends on a few factors, such as budget, desired R-value, and whether you prefer eco-friendly options.

R-Value

R-value measures the insulation’s resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the better the material is at insulating. Each type of insulation has a different R-value.

Moisture Resistance

Some insulation materials can hold moisture, leading to mold growth. Choose an insulation material that’s mold resistant.

Fire Resistance

Fiberglass and mineral wool are naturally fire-resistant, unlike cellulose, which needs to be treated with fire retardants.

Fast and efficient. I called the morning after we noticed issues. They gave me a timeframe and ended up getting to our house earlier than expected. I have a little one that didn’t sleep well in the heat so that was much appreciated.
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for the 5-star review! We're thrilled to know you had a fantastic experience with us.
We had to get our HVAC unit replaced and Eagle Pro was wonderful! John Berryhill was our technician. Jacob Willis was our sales consultant. They were very thorough. They had to replace all of the parts as well as some piping. They were very patient and kind. They did a great job protecting my floors when they were moving equipment. They cleaned up all the mess. They explained everything I questioned in a kind way. They did not pressure us into anything, but were very understanding.

Brian J responded to my call for service of my heat pump unit. After a very thorough inspection, and showing me evidence of several problems (most of which are because of the age of this unit), I decided to have the unit replaced. An appointment has been scheduled for later this afternoon to begin the replacement. I trust Eagle Pro to get this job done both responsibly and reasonably, and as soon as possible. Eagle Pro came highly recommended, and I feel sure I’ll be recommending them too!

Response from the owner:Thank your for the review and for trusting Eagle Pro with your Heating and Cooling needs!
Thank you, Eagle Pro. Matt was awesome and knew exactly what the problem was within a few minutes. Part ordered,.picked up, installed and confirmed to resolve the problem within such a reasonable amount of time. Can't thank you enough! Matt was very professional but like having someone you know and trust working for your best interest. Highly recommend Eagle Pro. They are in it to do what's right and not try to force you to replace an entire unit when a $350 part, knowledge, and a little elbow grease are all that's necessary!!
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for the 5-star review! We're thrilled to know you had a fantastic experience with us.

Company has been very helpful, however I had a new unit installed (Furnace and Ac) back in mid January and since then I have had to call them back twice. Both times the company has went above and beyond to get a technician out ASAP the fix the problems, I wouldn’t have any other company handle my home repairs they are THE BEST!
